Battling Compassion Fatigue
Justice, Health and Community partnerships employ a panoply of strategies in efforts to tackle the root causes of a person’s criminal behavior and achieve the holistic rehabilitation of the individual, family and community as appropriate. Practitioners working in these partnerships experience the successes and failures of participants and are usually very invested in the outcome of efforts of participants who have the courage to try to improve their lives. These emotional highs and lows can create burn out and compassion fatigue. Experienced practitioners describe the phenomenon, how it can occur and strategies to prevent and manage burn out and compassion fatigue.
